A solar powered generator and solar powered lights. You put the lights outside during the day to charge and use them inside to light the house while the electricity is out. Same with generator to power refrigerator intermittently to not lose everything.

There are website that can instruct you on making a small portable solar generator for $300.00

Lots of serious websites have lists for required items, such as the Red Cross and HomeLand Security. But I think "Hurricane.." brought up an important aspect: something small but useful to keep preoccupied for a duration. Include an LED type flashlight or lantern in the event you have to remain in a basement for some time. Especially with children, I feel a healthy distraction would be important to improve the outcome of the whole experiance.

You have to ask yourself what are some of the most likely scenarios you will encounter during this very general, yet incredibly likely, disaster. What are they? It doesn't matter really since the only actual thing you'll need to survive in this absolutely feasible post apocalyptic land of smoldering(?) or melting(?) things and disease-ridden(?) other things, is Billy Mays' work shed. Or "The Incredible Invention Den", as he calls it.
