I don't think your boss or anyone's company has a "true purpose" for the coffee. As far as why people drink it, some probably drink it to be sociable while other probably drink it to become more alert. The boss probably puts it out there for those who enjoy coffee to be nice.

Oh, and some people might drink it to cure a hangover while others may drink it because they like the taste.

I really think it's a little bit of both. For me it's mainly to get me going...I mean alcohol as a stimulant in the morning isn't the best choice, so coffee is a morning booster!

Its a just a warm drink to me, like tea is. Besides if you drink coffee a lot, you build up tolerance and after a while it loses its effect on you.
