most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

I would say self control... only open files from people you know. Make sure you using anti-spyware and anti-virus software with real time checking. Do scheduled virus/spyware checks. Do you recall what virus attacked you? AVG is pretty good... I use Avast! on my system... can't complain about it so far.
You say you had corrupt files... was it virus or just corrupted files? I work in my spare time as an IT tech... there are a lot of variables that can make you think it was virus... If you need more help contact me thru yahoo

Spend a lot of money on hardware/software; or never connect to the internet or load anything onto your computer. Get your install squared away, and make a restore point. Also, it never hurts to backup your system, but this takes a long time and uses a bit of space on your hard drive.

If you are using Internet Explorer, you can add these preventative measures to your current protections:
IE-SPYAD
"IE-SPYAD adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers, marketers, and crapware pushers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer. Once you merge this list of sites and domains into the Registry, the web sites for these companies will not be able to use cookies, ActiveX controls, Java applets, or scripting to compromise your privacy or your PC while you surf the Net. Nor will they be able to use your browser to push unwanted pop-ups, cookies, or auto-installing programs on your PC."

SpywareBlaster
"Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software."
"Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox."
"Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer."

Both are free!

Symantec and McAfee are the biggest AV companies. Use some type of antivirus and personal firewall combo. Do not go to risky sites (a lot of porn sites) and do not download spyware.

There are 3 programs I would reccomend. Norton Internet Security or McAfee Security along with ad-aware would be very good choices. McAfee is less expensive.
