Black and brown actually look great together since they're both neutrals. And sometimes if these colors don't match, it means you're not wearing the correct shade of brown. But I would definetly consider wearing black and brown together.

a lighter brown belt (almost tan) over a black dress is okay

i wore a black longsleeved shirt with a dark brown t-shirt on top. it wasn't THAAAAAAAAAAT bad. especially with dark wash (kinda black) jeans with brown stitching.
nobody glared or anything....

truthfully i do the colours blend together and look good at certain angles
