There is an in "E" in school systems that use it. In school systems that use it the "E" means failling but the student is eligible to bring up their grade in summer school. In the Providence, RI school district (for example) an E is given to a student who as a course average in the range of a 50 to 59% on his/her work. However, since students even with an "F" can not go to summer school under certain situations - the E has lost it's significance.
