I have a question for all of those who want to know why black women name their children weird names. Whats it to ya. Furthermore I'm asking for all those with so called weird names, my first and middle name are quite common for "white girls" I was told that I have a white girls name growing up. My chose not to name their children those so called "weird names" but for all the families and black women and men who chose to WHAT'S IT TO YOU! You can still name your daughters Brittany, and Jennifer, and Courtney, Jessica, Apple, and Chanel, and Melissa. Two of those names listed are mine. But like I said I have "white girl" names.

Don't understand what you mean when you say its none of my business about the opposite. I don't care what people name their children. But I do want to know why a question like that was asked and directed towards black women. So I asked in response WHATS IT TO YA?

Those people who say that are just not aware of other people, places, countries and cultures around them. Maybe that is the first sign of them recognizing that there are differences between all people and that those differences make the world a richer place and that they should open minded accept the choices of others and welcome a richer environment. Such differences and subtlies open the arena for creative thinking, problem solving and a wealth of variety.

Several of my best friends are black girls, their names are Linda, Marie, and some white girls named Tamara and Saxon.

Blow them off as ignorant to the world around them and be open yourself to whatever may come your way.

Actually I never thought about it until I read about the "issue" in the book Freakonimics. Would love to hear your feeling about the book if you read it. Not sure I agree all the conclusions but his method of analysis is interesting.

Personally as long as black people don't name their children with names that get them abuse, I really think they are free to name them whatever they want.

The problem usually arises in the following manner:
if you are racist and you see a person's name sounds "black" that might influence you screening of a resume. Personally I hope people don't do this but I'm sure there are these kind of people around. One hopes that organizations with such stupid hiring practices, suffer because of the fact they don't hire the best candidates and hence have a disadvantage over places that hire for merit.

(I'm not a big fan of quotas either to be fair, except as a stop gap measure to seed the system for a short period of time. I AM a HUGE fan of programs that provide scolarships for the economically disadvantaged or that find ways to even the playing field. That's me.)

I agree. My name is Christopher and i'm black. I don't see what the big problem is. It's like saying an asian person born in america can't name there song Lee or sumthing b/c they live in America. If i want to name my daughter Chiquita i will. I think ghetto names are nice and UNIQUE. But a lot of white people are about fitting into society so they wouldn't understand. I love ghetto names. Someone's name isn't going to hurt you either way so why do they care so much? and they always be sayin we tryin to separate ourselves, no we just wanna be unique and different.

true, folks need to be more worried about what kind of morals, values, personalities, strengths that the child should/will have then getting so upset over the kid's name.. it is every woman's right to look at her bundle of joy and bestow upon them the name that they think fits best their new princess or little king.... black women, keep naming your babies whatever the hell you want! as a white woman, i'd like to ask other white women: why do some of us feel the need to continue the tradition of naming your kids, becky sue, billybobjimbojuniorjack, sally jean, etc? those names don't sound funny to you?

Whats really is a black girl name or a white girl name for that matter.....My first name is French and my middle is Spanish, and I'm neither.....A name is just a name that the parents choose.....names don't make people....So.....who cares.

I feel you.
Just curious, what exactly are "white girl" names. I'm black and I have a name that is moslty had by white girls. Does that make the name white? My first name is Amy and my middle name is Candace... I don't think my names are white. I think they are mine and it doesn't really concern anyone else.

Personally, I think that people should be able to name their kids whatever they want (keeping in mind their kids' self-esteems) :)

I think that a name should fit the child's personality, their heritage, family history, or be one of creativity from their parents!

Oh, and btw, I think that every culture has their own "weird" names! LOL

You certainly sound like you have a heck of a chip on your shoulder. So, who in the heck asked you in the first place. You are coming across as a racist here.
