Roman slavery was no less heinous than that practiced in the United States from colonial times up to the end of the Civil War.

Some slaves were educated, given a great deal of personal autonomy, well-treated, and even eventually freed by their masters. Others had the just the opposite happen--they could be abused and mistreated in just about any way you can imagine (and possibly even some ways that no one can!).

About the only good thing to say about Roman slavery is that once freed, a Roman slave usually assimilated more readily into Roman society, regardless of his skin color.

It was no day in the park to be a slave in any time or any place.

I think any age could be enslaved, but I have heard that some slaves in Rome had many freedoms. Some became like family members to the families that owned them. Some were given great educations, they were allowed to travel, and had their own money. But I doubt this was in all cases.

The slaves captured in revolts were treated very harshly but were eventually emancipated.

For example the Jewish rebel fighters who fought a bloody war against Rome in 70 c.e. were taken to Rome in chains. Many of them were forced to fight lions in the arena and met their bitter end there.

But eventually they were emancipated and most of them assimilated and intermarried with the local Italian population. (Quite a few Italians have Hebrew ancestry).
