i have a friend who is my age (17) and her family is real strict. If your bad, for a little kid, parents slap your hand, theres nothing wrong with that. if you're little, then spanking the butt is ok, but shes 17. if she does anything wrong, she has to lie on her stomach on her dads lap and her dad just spanks her. i really think this is wrong, dont you?

And I know a woman who tells her 3-year old daughter that she doesn't have to share if she doesn't "feel like it." What is WRONG with these loony parents?! This 17-year old's dad has issues with power. I know some people like that. They think they have to teach their kid "who's boss." I don't think anyone should be spanked regardless of whether or not parents think it's OK. If the girl is really that out of control, it's probably because she was raised in such an ineffective environment in the first place! She obviously is not being raised to have her own internal self-control if she needs a spanking when she does something "bad." This almost convinces me that prospective parents should be psychologically tested and should get liscenses to raise children!

It's really wrong. It almost seems perverse? Are they part of some weird religion or a cult? She's old enough to just be told what's right and wrong or have other forms of punishment eg. grounding, no mobile or going out for a time period. Her Dad ight secretly find this perverse. I have a child and I'd never do that to her at that age. A slap on the bum or hand is ok when they are young but not a teenager! I also teach and I seriously think it is a form of psychological abuse by making her submissive.

I don't think that's appropriate either, but some so called "old school" parents feel it's o.k. Being 17, this is a young woman and not a child. She physicially should not be bent over anyone's lap. Plus, this may be seen as a way of degrading her; by making her submissive. Many men psychologically abuse their spouse in the same manner. But on the other hand, if my child were a holy terror (not to say that your friend is) and nothing else in the world worked, I might be resigned to try the same thing! But I'd try grounding first.

In the first place, I find spanking to not be the best answer to any problem, no matter the child's age. It teaches the child that physical punishments are the way to correct bad behaviors, which is not always true.
In the case of a 17-year-old, I especially find it wrong. She seems to old to be punished in this way. I also do find is semi perverted...

I am not a parent, but I teach, and I find this extremely wrong and damaging, especially between a father and a daughter. It is inappropriate and doesn't address whatever her behavioral problem is. It borders on abuse. I suggest that you tell your friend to talk to a trusted adult (perhaps her doctor, a relative, or a school counselor immediately. Let her know that you will be there for her. With any luck she can get the help she needs without causing her any undue stress.

As weird as this may sound, I really don't see anything wrong with it if thats how he has always disciplined her.
It's better than knocking the 'crap' out of her, like some dads do.
Seventeen or not, if she knows that this is usual punishment for doing something wrong, then who are we to judge 'how' he disciplines her, as long as it's not abusive.
And a spanking is far from abusive.
Maybe she shouldn't do things wrong then she wouldn't get spanked.

Yes this is wrong. She's almost an adult and she's a grown woman! If your friend has no problem with this, let it go. But maybe you should take it upon yourself to contact child services anonymously (meaning you don't have to reveal who you are and she & her family will never know unless you tell). It's almost like he does it in a sexual way. What man spanks his almost adult daughter?

at 17 yes, the parents do not wanna let go. I can't tell her what to do but one day she will realize enough is enough. Because at 17 that's to old to be spanked over the knee, come on.
