Yes, you will need a business license and a tax id number for starters. Go to your local court house and they tell you everything you will have to have.

Good Luck!

You need to get a contractors license. A license to do business (State and Federal Employer Identification Number). Some states require you to be bonded. Go to your local Better Business Bureau and they can give you a full listing of things you need. Other things, like Workers' Comp Insurance, you might want to have a payroll company do your payroll because it is very complicated to start out and you can get yourself in deep trouble if you mess around with that. Some states have various types of business taxes that you need to look into.

You need proof of insurance and you will need to get at least a Class C contractors license. Where I live it is from the state and you can download the application. It does get complicated but the information is online in most cases just do a search in your state for contractors license and you will find all of the information you need pertainent for your area, good luck.

You need to choose a name for your business, and then post a legal ad in local papers announcing the name of the business. Your county clerk's office can give you the necessary forms. That will get you established as a business in that county. They can also help you with county license requirements.

During the first few days of getting set up you also need to talk to an accountant to determine what form of business you want....sole proprietor, corporation, partnership, LLC, etc. There are pros and cons for each type of business with regards to taxes and liability.

Once you decide on what kind of business you want to be, you need to contact the IRS and state taxing authority to get set up for payroll taxes. Again, your accountant should be able to help you. Next you need to contact your insurance agent to get your business liability insurance, workers comp insurance, and an umbrella policy. They can help you with what is required for most contractors. Most GC's will require you have general liability, umbrella, and workers comp. You will need to be able to provide the GC's and customers with a certificate of insurance coverage whenever you start work on a job.

Once you have your license, your name registered, the form of business, insurances, and have registered for payroll taxes...

YOU'RE IN BUSINESS!!! CONGRATS!!!

You are going to have to go to your city and apply for a business license, otherwise you can be sued for illegal operations and I believe to have a business license you need a location for where your business is located.

check with the city/municipality you plan to work in. A license is a good idea, it helps your customers to trust that you are a credible contractor.
