Mesquite, Texas. It's close to Dallas and you get the feel of the big city.
Roswell is in the desert, has many tourists and is much smaller than the DFW area.
Two totally different cities and states.

Wow, both are terrible places. Any other choices? Mesquite is pretty bad but at least there are things to do there like the rodeo and close to Dallas. Roswell, well not much to say there. That town is fading fast. I was just there 2 summers ago and it almost looks like a ghost town. My Mom was born and raised there so over the course of 21 years I was there frequently. When I went back 2 years ago it was my 1st trip in 30 years. It was so sad and depressing.
Pick some place else is the best advice I can give you.

Each city has its own good and bad points. Mesquite is a suburb of Dallas; as such, you deal with all the good and bad points of living in a big city. Roswell is a small town; it has quite a few tourists. New Mexico is an interesting place in my opinion, but so is Texas. If I were you, I'd learn as much as possible about BOTH places, and decide from there.

yeah, neither would be at the top of my list, but since you didn't say why those are the choices, I'd have to go with Mesquite.
although on the plus side, Roswell is a lot closer to skiing at Ruidoso...

Much of Mequite is not a desirable place to live. Crime is pretty high.
Roswell is all about tourists.
