Dr. Douglas Hyde, from County Roscommon. He was a member of the Church of Ireland and was a member of Conradh na Gaeilge (Gaelic League). He was one of the last people in the world to speak the Roscommon dialect of Irish and the only person ever recorded using it.

im sorry to correct you but it was not eamon de valera as suggested, dr douglas hyde is correct to a cetain extent, but the best answer that ive seen, is the one that refers to the fact england wouldnt allow it.
in fact just prior to the irish easter rising, there was a distinction between the northern protestant area (which we know as northernn ireland), and the south. The fact that there was that divide, led to someone being asked to become NOMINALLY the president of the south. This man was sir roger casement. He is a fascinating man, and well worth a look at, for the history bods out there, interested in this period.

I don't think there's been one.

Since the Easter Uprising in 1916, England wouldn't allow it.

The history goes much farther back...but the "Republic" isn't officially recognized and is still under threat of rule by Brittania and is governed by ministers of parliament.
