We all appreciate beautiful flowers, natural sceneries, picture and art, women and men. But from where does the sense of beauty originate? I have not found any answer. Do you have any?
(Regarding beauty of women, I distinguish between pure beauty and sexual appeal. I am not using the word "beauty" in such a restricted sense.)

I suspect that my answer isn't going to be very helpful.

But I'm going to give it anyway.

Philosophers have been trying to define beauty for longer than any of us have been about. Largely without success. My answer doesn't mean much, but here it is:

Something is beautiful when it is exactly the way that it is supposed to be.

Let me 'splain.

A flower is beautiful because it seems pure. Unsullied. True to intention.

A person who is pure, unsullied and true to intention is also beautiful. Even if their outsides don't conform to any societally-given definition of beautiful.

A storm is beautiful because it is a true and real thing. It reminds us of the concreteness of reality and life. It is a part of the grand scheme of things.

If people could flip a switch somewhere and make it rain. . . . I'm not convinced that it would be beautiful. If we have a machine that could instantly create a rose from scratch. . . and we put it next to a rose in the dirt. . . . I believe the dirt rose would win every time. (Even if somewhat wilted. . . . it is more "true.")

Anyway. . . . helpful or not, that's my opinion on the matter.

Smiles,

Quill.

Beauty changes your perspective of everything. When you see a rose, at first you see it as a plant, a flower. But when you are so attracted to it as a whole, the shape, form, smell, and curves, you realize there is more than meets the eye, such as each individual petal that makes up the rose. It is beautiful because even when its just a bud, you'll ponder upon what it'll become. It is beautiful because when it withers, you will compare all other roses to that one.

You haven't found any answer? You have been looking in the wrong place. Why are you looking in the social science section? do you want a relativistic, ideologically driven answer, or do you want solid science? Evolutionary biology has been studying beauty since the time of Darwin. It underlies his sexual selection theory. Beauty, physical beauty is about pleasing symmetry and color. You need to explore the science of beauty. Start at sexual selection and you will see that beauty sense originates in our evolved history, just as every thing else does.

Little babies smile when they see a beautiful flower, inspite of its thorns & when they see a ugly object they sqeeze their lips and weep.
Many liitle ones try to catch a snake or hold on to fire.
Attraction towards beauty is natural.
Aesthetic sense is in built in all humans, like a moral law that wakes up our conscience.

Thats why people say God is beautiful!
Nature is beautiful!
But as we grow, and use our God given intelligence, we know what is harmless beauty!

Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose call it by any name!

Beauty comes from the eyes of the beholder. What is beautiful to one person may not be considered beautiful by another. There is no standard.

The sense of beauty originates from each individual mind. The answer can only be found within yourself.

Roses are very important horticulturally. They have medicinal properties too. Rose- water is highly beneficial for the eyes. When sprinkled over sweets it adds to the flavor. Bees suck nectar whereas brewers extract essence form roses. We thus get honey for nutrition and ‘attar’ for delight. Roses provide bread to florists and distillers and inspiration to poets and painters. The protocol authorities of require tons of them for VIPs who pay visit to a country. We therefore look after this sweet-smelling symbol of our traditional hospitality lest these foreign dignitaries miss the thrill of rosy welcome.

Rose growing is lucrative business in Britain. Rose growing can be a fascinating past time anywhere and with a little perseverance, awareness of new ideas; knowledge of soil, manure and plant physiology, and one can form an arid wasteland into a paradise.

A wag suggests that the transformation of an entire empire into a holding company euphemistically nomenclatured the commonwealth has robbed English roses of their scent. Another has come out with the historical explanation that the Britons deserved it for having christened one of their wars after roses.

True beauty illuminates, radiates and reflects of tender warmth to the heart . . . what ever is before your eyes, a flower, natural scenery, art, a man's smile, the ways of a woman . . . whatever is before your eyes that reflects those words I used above...then that is beauty.

By the way, a rose has a sweet, soft smell, is supple, folding over one another, curved, soft petals...roses are beautiful. As beautiful as they are, another is my favorite flower. Viva la difference.

flowers symbolise life. they are beautiful because they have a fresh colour, odour and stand out in a bunch of green leaves.

also probably because we associate roses with romance. that's attractive to most people. society would have played a large part towards how we feel about roses. it's interesting that a flower like a lilli is probably more beautiful than a rose, but people tend to prefer the rose. it's the romantic association that makes us feel so affectionate towards roses. it brings thoughts of love and companionship.
