Wow! You really can't go wrong with any of these, and I have actually read most of them. My preference would be Call of the Wild, then White Fang, then a coin toss between A Connecticut Yankee... and the Pearl. Faulkner is great, though generally long (but intricate in detail); Hemingway is awesome, and he creates characters that most people can identify with.

Do not try to read AS I Lay Dying please trust me on this don't do it.
I would suggest
The Things that They Carried It's a serious but good book
A Farewell To Arms Also a drama I think that you'll enjoy this
author
The Five People You Meet In Heaven also serious but probably
the easiest to read
The Pearl serious but I love Steinbeck's work
Their Eyes Were Watching God I love this book and highly
recommend it It's a story of a woman's life and it's a story
about love
I hope that this helps you.

mitch albom is famous for writing tear-jerkers
jack london is famous for writing so hideously that people want to shoot him in the face and yet this outburst of emotion gives people a false sense of having come into contact with genius
and there's absolutely no way you can go wrong with ernest hemmingway unless the first book you ever read by him is The Old Man and the Sea and you do so during your pubescent years

I just read "The Five People You Meet in Heaven". It makes you think about the consequences of what you do here on earth. It's a really good book, and easy to read.
