Different women have different preferences. I like "normal" Tampax (cardboard-type applicator, not plastic). I've just never liked plastic applicators, can't really say why. I also think that tampons with applicators of any type are easier to use than OB (which doesn't have an applicator, you just use your finger).
Regardless of which kind you use, start with the slimmest one they make, since that will be easier to insert. Once you get the hang of it, you can use the larger ones for heavier flow.
A couple more tips:
- The first time you try inserting a tampon, it will probably feel totally ridiculous, like you have no idea what you're doing -- mostly because you DON'T have any idea what you're doing, but that's OK! You'll get the hang of it. Just try to relax your pelvic muscles (I know, easier said than done), and try a few different angles until you figure out the right angle to insert it.
- Even if you're using a tampon, also wear a panty-liner type pad, to catch any leaks! Much easier than washing blood out of your underwear. I've been using tampons for years, and I still wear a pantyliner when I'm using them. (Plus sometimes you just can't get to the restroom in time when you know you need to change the tampon. Pantyliners are handy for those times!)
Good luck! :)

There is a product on the market that is a best kept secret as it puts the tampon industry out of business...
Its called INSTEAD. It is like a latex suction cup or a diaphram. They sell in boxes and are good for 12 hours. It covers the cirvex and catches any moisture that comes from there, blood or discharge. In emergencies, they can be emptied and washed and used again but it isn't recommended.
You don't see them for sell much in most stores but I saw some once in a Target. Look for them and ask for it. It only leaks when you use the restroom and I found them to be amazingly comfortable.
Careful because when you're finished with your period, you may forget to remove the last one...no big deal though. My gynocologist told me that it wouldn't cause an infection or anything.

I also like the Tampax Pearl. Since you are a first time user, try the regular or light absorbency to find what will work for you in any brand. They are a little smaller and easier to learn to use.
As icky as it may sound, all tampons come with instructions in the box to help you.

I like O.B. The don't have an applicator, so you won't have to fumble around uncomfotably with them. You just widen the bottom (where the string is) and insert. They hold really well too. My flow differs throughout my period, so they have a pretty cheap multi-pack that last me 2 cycles. If you prefer an applicator, I'd go for Playtex w/ the plastic one. They last longer than the Tampax Pearl.

Tampons are tricky you just can't use what your best friend is using. I tried them all. I use Kotex tampons those are the only ones that didn't leak for me, but that is me. Get a good idea of one you might like and start with it and if you don't like it get another brand. You will find the one that is for you.

The SMALLEST tampon i've ever seen is PLAYTEX SLIMFITS. They are super skinny and small (like my pinky finger). Perfect for learning to use tampons- or just light flow days. I recommend them to anyone. In my opinion, plastic applicators are the best because they slide in easier than cardboard. Good Luck- and Relax, you'll get it.

There are no best tampons as each person is different in what they like about the tampon they use. The same as certain people like different brands or styles of pads.

Don't get the cheap **** brands...
I use U tampons. It's the only tampon brand I've used..
DO NOT get tampons from those vending machine things in public toilets because they feel like cardboard and they are painful.

I like Kotex myself plastic applicator and it has a rounded tip, with a really sturdy string believe or not I have had other brands strings break on me(NOT FUN). Plus if your really sensitive in that area seems Kotex(for me) is the best easy on the skin and really easy to use and cost not too bad.

Playtex ,make sure you buy the unscented ones. Never use scented tampons its not good for your vagina and also you need to regulary rotate from a tampon to a pad I prefer always .
