I just realized that I've wasted the last 6yrs of my life right out of college trying to secure a coveted position when in reality, many have told me that getting passed over is the result of anyone with money usually 'buying' their way in. As in buying a piece of the company and pronouncing themselves with some over-glorified title.

So how are we hard-working people who've been with the company for years supposed to make it (as opposed to getting passed over for raises & promotions?)

More Yes than No. In order to offer rewards to those who give loyal service over time, a company needs to be in a stable situation itself, and basically none are anymore.

Hard working people are supposed to NOT make it. They get a wage and support those who "go for it". Or they don't. Period!

"Living well is the only revenge". Map out the life you want. Recognize that you must accept risk and provide for your future; take your experience, education and skills, and view the world as a consultant seeking clients to serve and leave for profit.

PS - The position you wanted wasn't that great after all.

I don't believe it is futile to work your way up within a Company, but the odds of doing it is slim. There are some good companies that allow for upward movement, but in my experience, it requires the employee going above and beyond the call of duty (hard work and dedication) to the company. In many cases more education is required and appreciated. Good luck.
