Hello! I just found out I'm pregnant on christmas eve, I came out to a due date of September 1st, but my Midwife (I only talked to by phone) said it'd probably be more likely around the 3rd, but tomorrow is my first prenatal exam. I'm really nervous, the past two years 4 of my sisters have concieved and misscarried (my mother and grandmother had a history of this as well). So tomorrow will they do a vaginal ultrasound? Do you think it would be out of place for me to request one? Could I afford it if my insurance say it wasn't nessasary?? I know I only have a few more hours to wait, but please let me know what you think!

Explain your family history... the midwife will decide. I suspect all they will do is listen for the heartbeat. Ultrasounds aren't usually done until around 18 weeks, unless there's special circumstances.

I think I had an ultrasound at my first or second visit (I don't remember). However, that was with a ob, which is different from a midwife. Midwifes will in general be less interested in doing an ultrasound unless there is a *reason* to do one (wanting to see your baby isn't usually a good enough reason :) ).

You can always ask for one - it's not out of place, but the midwife might not agree to do one. There's not much you can do about a miscarriage, and having an ultrasound this early wouldn't make a bit of difference in that regard. I don't know what the cost would be if your insurance didn't cover it.

Good luck and congratulations! Also, good for you for choosing a midwife - I will definitely have a midwife with my next pregnancy!

They will do a vaginal ultrasound on you or maybe even the regular abdominal us if u have a history of miscarriages or health conditions in your family so it is very possible. Let your doctor know asap about the situation with your sisters and your mother etc. If u feel at all worried u need to tell your midwife and u certainly can ask for an ultrasound to make sure everything looks ok. They may even offer it to you because of your history..Good Luck!

Usually they don't but some doctors like to. I found out I was pregnant a few weeks ago. When I went to my first visit on Dec 29 they gave my a vaginal ultrasound. I have 2 kids and had one miscarriage. They might make you wait until you're 7 or 8 weeks along, that's how far I was when they did mine. Good Luck with everything.

My first prenatal visit they did an ultrasound when I was 8 weeks, in the vagina like the other ladies mentioned. After they verified the baby was developing, I had to get lab work done that same day. The also scheduled me for My actual first visit prenatal appointment the following week, when I was 9 weeks.

You may want to request bloodwork be done to confirm your HCG (pregnancy hormone) level. It is supposed to double (approx) every two days so if you get blood drawn a few times it can give you an idea of the pregnancy is progressing normally.

Your Dr or Midwife may do an U/S. If you have concerns just ask them to scan you. I am an older Mom so I had tons of U/Ss and I think that if you ask for one they should do it for you. They won't see much this early and may want you to wait another week or two to check for the heartbeat.

Good luck. Try not to worry too much!

No you wont get an ultra sound the first exam you probably wont get one till like 18 weeks. There is no point to an ultra sound now anyway (unless she feels it medically necesary) the "baby" is more of a tad pole looking thing now. If a miscarriage is going to happen its going to happen theres nothing you can do to stop it sorry to say. The baby doesnt even look like a baby till about 3 months anyway. So no point requesting one unless the doc wants one.

Depending on medical historys they may or may not they are going to do a vaginal exam anyways at your first appointment. You could ask them for one but they may say they don't need to.
Your insurance will pay for it as long as the doctor says yes they should do one. Doctors wont do one if they aren't needed. Congrats on the new baby, I wish you luck, I've been there with misscarrages myself.
