I believe abortion could be legal until there are brain waves. I believe this is before 8 weeks though.
The real question is when does life begin and other than either conception or birth we have no other way to measure this.
But we do have a measure of when death is.
If we measure death by brain death could we not measure the beginning of life the same way???
If a person's heart stops beating you can bring them back but after brain death never.
I believe the brain starts fairly early in a baby and then it is alive definitely.
The extremists on either side would have to agree on this and then there would be no more fighting about it.
It is not just a group of cells as you say though and that type of thinking is just ignorant, but your premise is along good lines.

Right now, the statutes for a legal abortion is before three months of pregnancy. That is, 12 weeks not 8 weeks. Whether the method is by suction/ aspiration. or D&E.. After that it's via instillation of saline. And over the limit, it becomes illegal. A consent for both sex partners are required. Besides, it's called abortion before during and before the 3 months cut- off. It's called miscarriage when it's over 3 months.
A lot of religious scholars believe that life begins at the time of conception. Whereas medicine regards viability as based on the fetus ability to survive; on its own, independent of the mother.
Abortion is a very controversial issue. Pro -choice thinks it should lie on the sole discretion of the woman for her rights to choose abortion. Whereas the Pro-Life proposes to let the governement and / or every other private sector to dictate to a woman what to do with her body. A lot of crimes have been committed to realize the tension between these two factions.

Why can't we just leave the deciding of when an abortion should be performed to the person having the abortion and the medical professionals?
I think that messing with the law will allow for the religious right to come in and try to change things. Besides, there is no DEFINITE way to determine the amount of time someone has been pregnant. I think that 12 weeks is a good period of time.
Regardless, we need to leave abortion legal, because as long as it is legal, it will be regulated. Making it illegal will not stop it; it will only cause harm to the mother as well as the fetus. Taking the regulation out of it will allow anyone to perform them. It will not stop them at all. Why don't the "pro life" people see that end? Is it okay to lose a life, just so long as it is someone doing something they feel is wrong????

Because we can't all agree on when life starts. For those of us who believe that life starts at conception we can never accept abortion for non-medical reasons. It doesn't matter if the embryo or fetus looks like a human or has a nervous system developed enough to feel pain.

A theory has developed in the law that recognizes an age of "viability," which is when the fetus can survive on its own. It's used now for things like wrongful death and wrongful injury of a fetus. It's later than 8 weeks, but it seems to be the direction that the law is taking, and will probably end up being the compromise that both sides have to live with.

how about this notion. why don't we just kill all of the elderly over 70, because they are a liability behind the wheel(just as a child is a liability because your responsible for it) or because some have to wear diapers(which need changed like babies) or because they become senile and develop alzier timers (which means they need care just like a child does) I mean I could go on and on with the similarities! It's the same freakin' concept! People can't own up to there responsibilities, then stop having promiscuous sex! And if you choose to, and get pregnant, then you need to NUT THE FU CK UP and take care of your SH IT!

we can't agree cause abortion is just plain wrong, we're not God to decide who lives and dies. by getting an abortion ur killing an innocent life what if someone killed u when ain't do nothing wrong. Point of the matter is people wouldn't need to argue about this if we girls would keep r legs closed or at least used protection.

It is still human life. A human isnt fully developed until age 21 or 22. That doesnt mean we should kill toddlers or teens. It is not just a group of cells, embryologists agree that when the 23 chromozomes of the male combine with that of the female, it is human life. 93% of abortions are for birth control only, that fact disgusts me, as it should anyone.

Personally I believe abortion should be considered voluntary man slaughter. No questions about it. I mean if it is a case of rape or incest there is still someone out there ready and willing to adopt the child.

Abortion is a debatable issue particularly the transformation from cells to a human being. Thus, a law must be passed to clearly established when it will be legal or not.
