"The Alchemist" is fiction, yes. You could tighten that more by classifying it as a fable.

An alchemist was the word for someone who made their living trying to turn lead into gold. Some were ignorant and some were swindlers. Educated people don't believe in alchemy anymore.

I don't see how the word genre (meaning "type") fits with the job of being an alchemist. If I had to pick a genre I would go with "dummy" to give them the benefit of the doubt as to whether they are sincere.

i read the book and it's a very good read! now that you've asked, it's been while since i read it and i might open it up again one of these days.

i believe it is grouped under fiction.
