Hi I knew it as a famous painting. I remember a news story about the Pope JPII and the Black Madonna. So I checked it out. see below

The statue of Mary at Montserrat near Barcelona has a black face. It was thought to be a miracle until scientific tests showed she'd been painted in the sixteenth century. Quite why is anyone's guess!

These are Eurpoean depictions of Mary with dark skin. The explantion is unknown (to me at least).

It's a reference to a goddess-figure, Kali (or other names), and she signifies death and rebirth.
