My Mom and Dad.
Both grew up during the Depression, were poor, and had unbelievably tough times growing up.
It took me time to realize all they did for me and how hard it was for them, yet they never complained.
Dad was in WW2 and when they married after the war, they had next to nothing but they both worked their butts off to make a home for my brother and I.
Dad died 29 years ago and Mom is almost 85 now.....and I can only hope that I was worth it and made them proud. They've been my heroes for some time now.

WWII guys rank high, all military rank high, all people who have lost loved ones or have loved ones also rank high. The guy who goes to work and comes home to his family is a hero too.
Now the other guys you reference: First they are not true sportsmen, because in "sports" you get recognized only if you surpass a certain level. For example I consider Golfers, Tennis Players, Rodeo hands true sportsmen, because if they do not win they do not get paid.
I do not deny the tremendous athletic ability and work that football basketball baseball and so on take require, but there is NO incentive for a player or team to give the last measure fo their ability/devotion. You see this in the high paid crybabies that want more playing time want the ball more and so on. (Or those who dissrupt teams by their antics on and off the field)
I say give them a basic salary based on their position and years in the league as well as their performance and then give the wining team a set % of each gate if they win.

My hero's are the troops coming home in caskets and maimed beyond recognition, and the troops that are still in Iraq that know any minute they may be dead. The Generals and troops have now turned against Bush , but he wanting to send 20 or 30 thousand more to be slaughtered.
