i've been seeing a lot of those kinds of ads and their offers are really really tempting, like a free laptop or a free iPod. i haven't yet tried signing up or something to those things because i'm afraid there might be a catch. do they have a catch? are they safe?

The "catch" is usually having to buy products or sign up for credit card offers (OFFERS being plural, so more than one). The people who run these "you won..." things get a decent amount of money from having you buy something or signing up for a credit card. Though, usually not enough to cover the cost of the item they say you won. They rely on the fact that many people will not be able to complete the buying process.

Common sense should tell you that giving away a free laptop or iPod has a catch.

Don't believe for a second that you were any kind of lucky visitor to the site. Like the other poster said, they are after your info. While it is possible to get a free laptop, they make you go through an entire series of purchases from each of their sponsors. So whether or not it's really free, depends on the eye of the beholder!

Well, the only catches are once you give your email, you'll get a bunch of spam crap everyday. And after you fill out their "qualification form" you find out you must complete sponsor offers to win the "free" prize. So, after 1/2 an hour of filling out crap forms, you get spam, more spam from sponsors, more spam from their affiliates, and odds are you did not qualify on one offer, so you win SPAM.

Rule for life! If it seems to be too good to be true, it probably is.
Economic Principle: TANFL: There ain't no free lunch! Get a pop up blocker from one of the search engines...YAHOO maybe?

They are virussed and fake. Don't believe any of them; they're not real.
I mean seriously, if everyone was just giving stuff away then we'd all be rich!
If you think it is too good to be true, then it most likely is.

NEVER, click on those things. You will probably get a virus, or more specifically a "trojan". They are just scams.
