It is excellent if you do it right. You can eventually have fruit after you have gone through the carb ladder, as well as whole grain food products. It's not an all you can eat fat/bacon fest. You still have to have balance and moderation, but it's easier because you eventually lose your cravings for bad carbs if you stick with it and do it right!!

3 yrs ago I lost 54 pounds in 5 months. I started back last week and Ive lost 15 so far. I would get a physical before starting the diet though, not every ones body can handle it
some of you people sound very undeducated. try reading the atkins book and find out that you can eat carbs, just do it sensibly and not be a pig with it

I've heard very negative things about the Atkins diet. I've even read a story of a girl who died from it because she didn't get the nutrients she needed by eating only those types of food. I'd be careful.

I've heard that over the long term atkins is a very bad diet and you will be worrying about more than just your weight.

I lost 100 lbs in one year. Probably not the healthest way to do so, but I would have never been able to do it otherwise. I think one year on Atkins is better than a lifetime of being 100 lbs overweight.

These people that are saying that it is bad because your body needs carbs obviously don't know anything about the diet. You START OUT eating very few carbs the progress upward. Its not like you spend your entire life eating 20 grams of carbs or less. And guess wht??You eventually add fruits in too!AND grains!
People that bash this WOE need to learn everything about it before spewing negative comments.

Very bad. On the Atkins diet you can eat all the bacon you want, but not apples. What the heck, right?

Good if you follow it religiously. I originally lost 55 pounds and kept it off for three years. The past three months, I decided to eat carbohydrates [holiday dining and all...], and quickly gained 20 pounds, BUT, since I started dieting January 1st, I lost 18 pounds (yes-in one week). I know it was mainly water weight, but I'm sticking to it. Ive tried other diets, and nothing comes close to the simplicity of this diet, and the range of foods still allowed. I don't get hungry.

Effective. Not good. Weight loss is temporary, unless you vow to go the rest of your life never eating any carbs again.

Difficult to do.
