I have an '89 Honda Accord, manual transmission. Today I could not get it to turn over. It would chug, but not actually kick over. The radio was on, and I tried to pump the gas, also tried it on more level ground (have had to do that before in the past) I got it to turn over once for about half a second, but then it died again. About 8 hours later I tried again and it started right up! Any suggestions on what the problem could be?

Sometimes older motors tend to have 'piston swell' after the cooling water stops circulating. Let it cool then give it a try. Keep your battery charged too.

Some engines seem to start easier when they have been sitting for awhile. If the timing of the car is too far advanced, the engine will "ping" which is caused by "detonation". This causes the engine to run hot as well. Usually an engine that is running under a condition of detonation is difficult to start when it is warmed up and starts easier when it is cold. I'd have the engine timing checked by a trustworthy mechanic. I hope this helps.

Sounds to me as if you have a clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump or overheated fuel pump. Since the fuel pump uses the fuel as lubrication and to keep the pump cool it is advisable that you should always keep at least 1/4 tank.

P.S. Pumping the gas on a fuel injected motor does nothing, it used to on a carbureted motor, it would pump fuel into the motor.

i own a repair shop, and there's a difference in one not turning over, and one not starting,,you said it wont turn over,,that means the engine wont even turn over to try and start,,if its starting up,and then dieing,,then it is turning over ,just not starting,,you may have a bad gas filter on it causing it to die as soon as it starts .,either that or the ignition is giving problems with it,,it might pay you to have this one checked out,,usually if one starts and the dies out like that its because of the ignition giving problems,,or its not getting enough gas to run,,have it checked,,good luck hope this help,s.

the only thing I can think is that you flooded it when you were giving it gas but if that's not it, it could be a fuel system problem like a pump or filter.
