The answer can't be that we brits have rugby, and they have their soccer, because Americans/ Canadians play rugby too. Do you think it will ever make it big over here?

You shouldn't be generalizing a whole country on two people. I'm American and I can give you many european cities Amsterdam Berlin London Dublin Madrid Odessa Perm Milan Etc, etc. Now you list a bunch of cities in the United States, without saying New York or Los Angeles. You're reading the 10 most famous people in America probably from a bunch of thirteen year olds on the internet. Anyone mature enough here would not classify Taylor Swift as one of the ten most famous people in the world or in the states for that matter. And to say we don't know where we are fighting is beyond stupid- Everyone knows where we are fighting and what we are fighting for. That was just plain ignorant. You're not the one who got bombed on 9/11. This was the stupidest and most NARROW-MINDED question I have seen in a LONG time.

Most of the points made are true that I have read. I would have to agree with the point that the UK's sport is soccer and the US is football(american) Steve P. is the idiot and his response should be overlooked. He is basically calling football stupid, which I'm sure if he ever watched a game like a real man he'd understand. ANYWHO,
It may catch on because 10 years ago baseball was the #1 sport over here, but now it's football.

It's interesting that American football is really not played outside of the US and its territories (there are some awesome Hawaiian and Polynesian players). Baseball has caught on throughout the Caribbean, Central and parts of South America, Japan, Korea and Taiwan, as well as the United States and Canada. As has been pointed out, the UK has its football (soccer) which has worldwide popularity (you can have it), rugby and cricket, both of which are popular throughout the British commonwealth. Where would you fit our football in with all that? As the Buckeye said, you all are set. You may be able to get the NFL channel if you have satellite TV.

Nice try pretending to be British at the start, H L, but you kind of went out of character halfway through.

It's not popular for a number of reasons. It is excessively violent, to the point that one might get the impression that skill is not important. Rather, force is all that matters.

Secondly, it's a corruption of actual football (soccer). Some American jerk picked up the football one day, and just started running around with it to piss everybody off. That was how it started.

Thirdly, American football has become an American cultural institution to the extent that another country could not simply embrace the sport. They would, in fact, have to, or be seen to, embrace parts of American culture at the same time. Therefore, embracing football is like submitting to American culture.

Having said that, I think the UK is in a sort of crisis of confidence these days. The sad doofuses will probably embrace American football as an act, of barf-inducing cultural sublimation, in the next decade. I have no faith in them anymore, and I'm sure they don't either.

The NFL operates a developmental league, NFL Europa, with teams in five German cities and one in the Netherlands. The professional Canadian Football League plays under Canadian rules. The sport is popular as an amateur activity in Mexico and American Samoa and to a lesser extent in Japan, Europe, Korea, New Zealand and Australia.
Despite this, the game has been slow to catch on in countries where soccer is already established as the most popular sport. Chief among criticisms of the gridiron game is the amount of time elapsing between plays and the number of interruptions in the game for time outs, penalties, out-of-bounds plays, etc.

Because y'all have different sports over there that we don't have over here. You are less likely to see a soccer game being broadcasted over here than you would in the UK. Football is very american, and not much so UK. No, I don't think it will ever get big in the UK because y'all have polo, criket, and rugby. Y'all are set.

Idk because the NFL isnt willing to give up its stars...there actually is an NFL Europe, theres like an amsterdam team and about 5 others, but they are full of players that are almost good enough to make it to the NFL but not quite, its kinda of similar to a minor league system
