The Devils Rejects (ugh, the part where they made that woman wear her husbands skinned off face as a mask... EWW)
Or any of the Saw movies.

Alien was terrifying. I saw it in a huge, packed theatre in Seattle when I was 14. When the tentacle hurled out of the egg and onto John Hurt's astronaut mask, 900 people jumped out of their seats. That was the most electric response I've ever seen at a horror film.
Halloween was also great in 1978, but now every teen slasher movie has made it look quaint.
But you're right - it's hard to top Exorcist. Try a good ghost story called The Changeling. No blood, just chills.

I liked The Hills Have Eyes. Watch it in the dark with no distractions. Friends are okay, as long as they don't talk during the movie or ruin it by criticizing the acting. It has alot of "jump points."

Thirteen Ghosts. It's lame the second time but the first time was majorly scary.
