Football is a simple, yet rough game. You can either pass the ball or run the ball. If you pass, the quarterback throws the ball to a receiver, who is running some kind of route. It you run, the quarterback hands the ball to the running back and he tries to run as far as he can without getting tackled. Once you get tackled, the play ends, and the spot of the ball is where you begin your next play. When you either run or pass the ball into the endzone, you get 6 points. At this point, you have a kicker come onto the field. The kicker tries to kick the football through 2 posts. If he successfully does it, then they get 1 more point and they will have a 7-0 lead. You get 4 tries to try to either pass or run for 10 yards. If you fail, you usually kick the football to the other team. Or if you are near the other team's endzone, but it's 4th down, you can kick a field goal. Same idea as the extra point for a touchdown. If the kicker kicks the ball through the 2 posts from where you are, that's 3 points. If he misses, the opponent takes over at that same spot.
Yeah, it can get confusing. But if you watch it enough, you sort of get the hang of it.

watching it is the only way your gonna get it, a lot of the announcers break every play down so if you pay attention then you'll figure it out, football isn't like basketball where there are pretty specific guidelines and the refs don't have to get too involved, there are a lot of rules in football, basic things like offsides and pass interference you'll learn by watching the game, and the more complicated stuff you'll eventually get but check out nfl.com and you'll find a rulebook and a basic kinda beginners guide.

each team gets four chances to move the ball 10 yards.
each chance is called a down.
that is the basic concept.
try to understand that first.
everything else flows from that.
