One reason I think there is less of an emphasis on song writing and creating new tunes is because life is much better than the 60's and 70's. In those years people were exposed to war and had to actually even undertake some army training to be sent to war. And even themes such as womans rights and racism? This allowed artists to write songs that had deep meanings rather than just creating the commerical music by the bucklet loads like nowadays. Do you think music has lost its creativity factor?

Yes I agree with you. And even songs that do talk about war and the government now-a-days have become cliches and aren't as ground-breaking as the songs back then were. There were so many movements affecting society that music just wnet along with them. Now, there is nothing that effects our society. So there is nothing to define our lives, which makes today's music seem empty.

it is possible that theres less of an emphasis on creativity because of the fact that music began to be viewed as a business and artists became products to sell. there are still honest musicians, you just have to know where to look. independent bands and labels put out their own music and theres a lot of great stuff out right now.

also, a political statement isnt the only thing that makes a song creative. i mean, even Irreplaceable by Beyonce has some creative lyrics. she has a great theme about a taxi and some clever lines in the chorus.

broaden your horizons, find some new music, and try to appreciate music that you might not think is creative at first for the little things like the melody and the hook.

Modern music sucks because its so commercialized and over-produced today.

Plus, its more geared toward a visual audience. If it has a good video it will probably be a hit, even if the song stinks.

Back in the 50's, 60's, and 70's, you didn't have MTV. So all the great music came by "listening" rather than seeing. Therefore, more emphasis was put into the quality of the song.

Wrong, it was all better back in the 50s & 60s, including the music. The main reason that music was better was because it was mostly written by professional songwriters that did nothing else. It was in the 60s that musicians began to feel that they had to write their own music whether or not they were any good at it.

On the other hand, there was a lot of crap written and performed in the 50s. For every good doo-wop song there were 10 bad ones.

modern music doesn't suck. the main problem is that most people look for it in the wrong place.

the reason mainstream music sucks, is because producers and labels tend to suck all creative elements out of music and turn it into stuff that sells.

so now, all you have, are labels catering to the largest audience possible, 12 year old girls. Not totally, but you have to think that the school scene is heavily centered on music, and they cater to that. that is why "pop" is so popular.

it is just a money thing. try listening to some independent artists. try to find a place that promotes local music. all of that is untainted.

I think that popular music, i.e., Top-40 music, has lost almost all its creativity and spirit. The people who write those songs write them to make money, not because they actually have something to say.

I'm starting to feel the need to listen to fresh new music myself (I pulled away from music when music went all "urban,"), so I'm looking to branch out into lesser-known genres. If you find something cool, let me know! :-)

yeah a ton of modern music sucks. i think it is sad. Mostly here in america though. I listen to a lot of European music and it has stayed the same which is good. but American influence is getting over to the western most parts of europe and slowly corroding it like ebola to a fair skinned child. mainstream music is getting realy sad and whiny and it realy hurts to hear people b!tch so much in muisc.

(i listen to a lot of undergroud metal and stuff that would make most peoples hearts explode in their chests, their souls rot, and their ear drums get blown into their brains) and most of it is from europe
