For an air compressor

I have not heard of a single stage motor but a single phase motor is common. It refers to one that runs on just one phase of a multiphase electrical service. They tend to be smaller motors.

A two stage compressor has a cylinder that compresses air to one pressure and then fills another higher pressure cylinder from that air to raise its pressure to the working level needed.

If the single phase motor can provide all the power needed it can be wired to run that multi-stage compressor. Check against the compressor's specifications because it might not have adequate horsepower.

Just hook up the motor to both stages. The motor wiil run the same regardless of which stage tells it to start.
