Dispite popular belief,
checking your local pawn shop is not a bad idea. I have gotten some really decent deals on things including musical instruments. In some cases you may even be able to haggle a little. Hope all the best for you and your daughter however you choose to go about it.

You have a lot of choices in the $400-500 price range, without having to buy a new/used guitar from eBay.
Ovation makes the Celebrity C44 acoustic/electric and it can be gotten for about $400. Ovation's Celebrity C-24 can be gotten for under $300.
Ibanez also has a few models within the price range, the AEL-20E acoustic/electric, with a beautiful flamed maple finish or, if you're looking for a nylon stinged model, the AEG10ETNG is listed for about $300.
I own an Ovation and love playing and maintaining it. It's much easier to change strings because they have a string-thru bridge, rather than the traditional pins that most acoustics have.
Both makers put out high quality instruments, but I'd put Ovation ahead of Ibanez as far as acoustic's go. Check out prices and available model finishes at musiciansfriend.com

OK.. too many things needed to be known. How old is she? If she's not nearly adult size, a full size acoustic will be too big and will be hard for her to play. There are student size guitars that are good options for smaller players. At a reputable music shop, you could probably find something for less than $200.00.

If she's nearly an adult, there are some nice offerings by epiphone and yamaha at that price level or less.

Unless you're an experienced guitar buyer, stay off eBay. you could really get hosed. Cheap is Cheap on instruments. If you can't see and feel a guitar, you shouldn't buy it.

If you really need to spend $500, get a $250 Yamaha and send me the other $250.

Some companies that make good acoustic/electric guitars include: Takamine, Taylor, Martin, Yamaha. Just make sure you play it before buying. How does the setup feel? Is the neck and string height comfortable for you? Does the guitar sound good and full when played acoustically? And finally, when you plug into an acoustic amp or PA, does the guitar still sound good. Good luck.

If you have a sam's club by you, check there. I saw an Ibenez acoustic with stand, case, tabs and instructional video for something like $150.
