This is a good question. Some things you need to remember though:

Each one may be a different price but they are also different in amenities and travel time.

- The plane will probably cost more but be the fastest.
- The train will be slightly cheaper but will take longer and most likely require you to take a bus for part of the trip or change trains somewhere as most of the rail lines do not connect those two cities.
- The bus will be the cheapest but it will take a very long time to cover that 2000+ mile trip. (you will also be amazed at how many places that bus will find to stop along the way)

One of the things that will save you the most is making your plans and reservations as soon as you can. Be careful when you do this though. Ask about cancellation policies and if there is a fee for making changes. If you are unsure of the exact date of your travel plans keep in mind that a lot of companies offer a fare that is slightly more but lets you change your itinerary as often as you like.

With that in mind. Check out a few different sites. Go to Expedia.com and Travelocity and Priceline.com, then dig a little deeper. Go to the actual sites for the airlines and see if you can get better deals. Check out Amtrak's site and Grayhound's sites as well.

Check with a travel agent as well, especially if you know one or can get someone to refer you to one. Travel agents charge a fee but so do the travel websites. The advantage is that the travel agents fight really hard to get you extras for the same money cause they have to work a lot harder to compete in this online age. If you do go to one though keep in mind that you may have already found a better deal somewhere esle, dont sign anything with them til you know that you want to go through them and deffinately never let them talk you out of a great deal that you already have.

Also you could look into renting a car for a oneway trip. If you have the time and money for hotel stays you could drive there in around three days and some places like Budget offer one way rentals and unlimited miles.

Put an ad on craigslist indicating you want to share the ride with someone who is going in the same general direction. Share expenses, and get to know someone new!
