Use ultra thin pads. I wouldn't start out with tampons at first.

It depends on the amount of flow and how comfortable you are with tampons. The big ones your mom has are for heavy flow days. I like to start with a super absorbant but thin pad with a tampon because of the amount of flow in the first day or two. I find that I leak with tampons, and need the extra security. Then I can just remove the tampon after a couple hours, and use the pad. As flow decreases a tampon with a pantiliner works well. You will find what works for you with time. There are all sizes and shapes of pads at the store, go look and find something you feel looks like it will work for you and allow you to feel comfortable.

Ok I got my period when I was 11 && I thought I did number two in my pants but then my mom explained everything. My mom did the same thing at first bought big pads. Now that I've had it for 5 years I use Pearl Tampons, at night I use the kotex pads with wings, you should always use pads with wings they are better. Then I like to wear pantiliners when I use tampons just in case. My advice is get a pad that your use too. If your mom lets you use tampons thats great just make sure you change them alot and dont sleep with them. My mom didnt let me at first and they are kinda scary when you think about TSS! So take my advice && you'll be fine. Congrats on becoming a woman. We all go through it dont worry. Good Luck.

Until you get used to your period use Pads, Tampons take a bit of getting used to, you need to have a fairly good idea of what your flow is like and change them frequently to avoid illness.
They make slender pads, and even teen pads. Get something with wings because they stay in place better. Pads a much better as you get used to having your period.

when I first started, I was afraid to use a tampon. So i just had those big pads. If I were you, I would use a tampon. Just get the kind that are small, so that you can get used to them. They are so much better than pads. If you have any questions dont be afraid to ask me. :]

I first started with the tampons for teens-they're smaller and I believe come in a purple box. and tampax makes them. If they dont feel right (or your bleeding through them) switch to a higher absorbancy.
And wear a pad at night-until you fully know how your period is and if u don't sleep more than 6-8 hours.
Myself on the other hand, I sleep with a tampon in. I dont like feeling like i have a diaper on.
But make sure you're changing it ever 4-6 hours. and start seeing a obgyn to get regular paps and checkups. and make sure you tell your doc how your period is too.
Hope that helps!

You should use pads at first, because tampons will be very uncomfortable until you are older. It is actually better if you are sexually active to use tampons. They have some very thin pads now that aren't as uncomfortable as the bulky diaper types anymore. Try Always thin, they have them in any grocery store.

I started out with pads, they are kinda uncomfortable though. Get the ultra thin ones, they will be a lot easier to use, then you can work your way into tampons and I bet you will like them better, I sure did. Get the ones with an applicator they look harder to use, but they are so much easier.

It depends on what you are comfortable with. Try using tampons, that way you won't have to worry about leakage. I use a tampon with a small mini pad just incase any gets out...
They are slightly uncomfortable at first, but when you get used to using them it won't be so bad!

I use always ultra thin with wings. They work great. Always has many different styles and brands. You have to just find what works for you. Talk to your mom, let her know the current pads are to long. She will get you other kinds. Or go to yahoo search to find Always Pads and see what kind you like and ask her to get those. I know my kind by the color of the wrapper. They have tons..
best of luck~~
