I do not think that rotten people believe they are rotten. Whenever you think someone is rotten, explore deeper - you will find that there is a reason for what they are doing. Of course, many times the reasons are very wrong. For example, the reason they are rotten may be discrimination or a belief that they are entitled to something (which you obviously believe they are not). In any case, they are not being "rotten" but they are behaving consisten with some belief system. Now, you may not agree with their believe system, but that won't help you. The best thing is to try and understand their belief system and work up a solution from there - unless of course you do not care and you can safely ignore them.
Though since you are asking the question it probably means that you are not confortable ignoring the rotten person, so you may be better off trying to understand where the behavior comes from. Who knows, you may discover that their way is the right way after all :-)

I would agree more with your second statement rather than the first - plain broken creatures causing pain to others. Misery loves company meaning miserable people love to make others as miserable. Sad to say, nevertheless, the ways of the world. Need to be careful when dealing with someone not close family or friend.

You can't know what night is without having first experienced day. No warmth without knowing what cold is. You can't know the good without first knowing its opposite, the bad. Without something to compare things to, there is no real meaning.
Unfortunately, that holds true for all of life.
People like you described are simply so used to the one thing that they've never experienced the other.
Be nice. Give them something better to compare themselves to and see what happens. You might be surprised.

I think you're right. Some folks hate themselves so much that they no longer care about what other people think of them ... Part of that disagreeable nature comes from guilt and the assumption that everyone around them knows how bad they think themselves to be.

You are assuming there is another kind of human? We consume, you consume so other living things must die. Being less rotten then others does not make you unrotten. Don't compare because in the end it really doesn't matter unless it simply makes you feel superior..you aren't.

There is another possibility. Some people have had so many rotten things heppen to them that they expect everyone to be as rotten to them as they are to others. "Do unto others before they do it to you." It doesn't occur to them that someone wouldn't do it to them.
