The contractions propel the contents along the digestive tract and aid in maximising surface area contact with the contents thus maximising the chance of absorbing what is needed. It is the epithelial cells on the surface of the villi that do the absorbing so moving the contents around increases the chances of all of the nutrients present coming in contact with the cells.

ie. they work to mix the contents and to move them along
