what's the best method of cleaning staffordshire pottery? I have several transferware plates that have some minor to heavy staining/discoloration. I don't want to pay for a professional to clean them, if there is an easy way to do it myself. Any suggestions? And are there any websites on the subject that offer free advice on cleaning antique pottery?

Generally, you need 40% hydrogen peroxide, from a hair salon supply store, then soaking paper towels in the peroxide, wrapping them all around the plate or other piece - USE KITCHEN GLOVES TO PROTECT YOUR HANDS -then wrapping the piece again in aluminum foil to seal it tightly, then heating slowly in 175-200 degree over for several hours to overnight, depending on the degree of staining. The peroxide will oxidize any stains. Rinse thoroughly and gently dry. A WELL VENTILATED KITCHEN IS ALSO A MUST! Perhaps waiting until a warm spring day to be able to open your windows if you live in a cold climate.
