I've heard a few people say "I feel like the catcher in the rye." I know that there's a book called Catcher in the Rye, but I know I will never read it. So what does it mean? Thanks in advance.

If you aren't able to read the book, but want to get a basic understanding of the meaning of the title, and how it comes up in the book, you can check a source like "Spark Notes".

Specifically,

1) a brief outline of the book's plot
http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/catcher/summary.html

(The page also has links to more detailed summaries of each chapter -- chapter 16 and 22 are the ones where the "catcher in the rye" expression is discussed.)

2) Brief explanations of the quote and theme itself, and how it fits in the story

(see quote #4)

Since you've given us no context it's difficult to say whether the people you are hearing are thinking of themselves as idealistically 'trying to protect children in their innocence, from the hypocrisy of the adult world' (as the main character of the book wishes to do), or in a more general way comparing themselves to him in his personal struggle with 'coming of age' and dealing with the adult world. But perhaps checking out the links above will help you figure that out.

The Wikipedia definition goes to the main character's wish, but it probably doesn't connect very well to a person saying "I feel like the catcher in the rye."

The main character is a teenager who is getting kicked out of school. He is very bitter, cynical and alienated and can't figure out what's wrong with everyone around him. This is probably what they are referring to.

Incidentally, the book is fantastic and an easy read. You should give it a shot. I guarantee you will be taken in within the first few paragraphs.

Based on Wikipedia, it means "how he wishes to wipe out corruption from the world and protect children"
