The Great Schism was the split between the Eastern Orthadox and the Roman Catholic Church in 1054.

The term may apply to two different events: the split between the Western Roman Catholic Church in Rome and the Eastern Orthodox church, in 1054; or the split in the Roman Catholic Church with two popes, one in Rome and one in Avignon, France in 1378.

In each case, the Church was divided into two camps.
The latter split was resolved in 1417, but the earlier split has not yet been resolved, and the two churches exist to this day.
