Subtle. I've found that my imagination tends to creat much harsher images than any director can portray.

As a film critic with over 2000 films, they both have their weaknesses and strengths. I personally love the 1970's horror, it tapped into really deep themes psychologically- todays standards are lower, doesn't take much to poke an eye out and not be effected by it.... Tod Browning is my absolute favorite director of the genre, his Freaks and Dracula are must haves for any film connoisseur. Dario Argento is a master at reweaving horror into an art form, he's brilliant in that respect. Suspiria... absolute classic in every sense.

OUCH. It's nightmare city for me tonight. Actually I do like scary movies of both genres but I prefer psychological thrillers over slasher flicks. They tend to scare me longer on a base level of primal fear.
The blood & guts films always make me frightened for a time, but that fear doesn't last because I often wonder & sometimes actually verbalize to the poor person about to die to tell them that they're doing something very STUPID.
It's harder to tell what is a bad move when the mind is the target and not just the physical body. And I think that's because we are more than just our physical form. Our Energy goes on & if it's threatened either with extinction or instability, or insanity....that is what is truly frightening, imho.

Subtle...like "the Others".
Too bad the gorefest flicks have taken over.....
I won't even WATCH horror flicks now, without a shout-out from friends/family that it is NOT a gory one.

Shock and awe, boring and over done. Subtle sneaky and startling. Now that's the kind to curl up in front of a nice warm fire place with your friend and get scared together.

Hmm...I prefer the subtle kind as well. I have all the Romero Dead series (ie Night of the Living Dead, etc). If you view beyond the gore, it's really about the human condition.

Oh definitely the subtle kind. They stick with you better. My favorite thing is a great big book of Victorian ghost stories. I have the hugest collection of them.

The subtle kind -- sometimes when they add soo much gore and blood, it just takes away from the suspense and the mystery.

I like the subtle creepy scary movies with a point. not all the blood and guts. I always feel its used unnecessarily in films in attempt to shock.
