Try that scanner, it downloads a program to your computer and runs a scan, tells you what type of memory you have (including the speed), and what you could potentially add.

It is also free. They just make it so you can purchase RAM sticks from them. Convenient, huh?

There are several free utliities available that will read out the exact type, make and model of your RAM. I believe that Windows does not provide this info, just the amount.

I use SiSoft SANDRA
http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/
its very comphrehensive and includes tools to benchmark your system.

Belarc advisor will also work
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

both of these programs will show you all of the info such as the clock speed, latency, type of RAM to ensure that you buy the right type if you want to upgrade.

You can tell how much memory you have by right clicking on My Computer and choosing Properties. However to find out what type of RAM you have, you'll need to pop the case and check out the product stamp on the modules

SiSoft as above is one way but i like to use CPUZ awesome little program to use go to http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php and download the program there and click on the Memory and top left hand corner it will tell you the Type of ram your computer runs :)

It's a small download also so your not downloading a HUGE installer just to see what you are running :).

It also tells you everything else you need to know like your CPU, Motherboard etc.

It probably took you longer to type this question and submit it. Just open the case and look it takes like a minute.

This will tell you about the type of RAM. Do not go to My Computer>View System Information, as it will only tell you how much, not the type!

You need third party application like SiSoft Sandra 2005 to get more detailed information on pretty much everything your system has. It's not free though.
