When is it safe to give my child peanut butter? My daughter is a year old and is eating most of what we eat, so I was wondering if it's safe yet.A. There really is no definitive answer to this question. Much depends on your family history. If you or anyone in your child's family has a food allergy or allergic type disorder (like asthma or eczema) or if your child has had a food allergy in the past, then you should wait to introduce peanuts and peanut butter. How long? According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, you should wait until your child is 3 years old.
In addition, mothers with any history of a peanut allergy in the family should avoid peanuts and peanut butter in the third trimester of pregnancy and for as long as they are nursing their children.

If there is none of the above in you or your child's history, however, then peanut butter can be a healthy addition to the diet even before your child turns 1 year old. Just be sure to avoid giving big spoonfuls of peanut butter and never give children under 3 years of age whole peanuts because these pose a choking hazard.

With all that said, be aware that a peanut allergy can be severe, lifelong and potentially deadly. Look for signs of an allergic reaction such as:

hives
difficulty breathing or asthma symptoms
swelling of the mouth or throat
vomiting or diarrhea
loss of consciousness
These signs can appear in just minutes or they make take hours, so be watchful during this time and do not wait to call 9-1-1 or your health care provider. Call immediately!

If you are concerned about your child having a peanut allergy, the only real way to avoid the danger is to avoid peanuts and peanut butter altogether. But be aware that for the majority of children, there is no danger.

Yes, peanut butter is a very allergy causing food. They can spell death for a baby that is allergic. Our pediatrician recommends no PB or peanuts till after the 2nd birthday just in case. Then when you do introduce it you should watch the child for a while afterwards to make sure there is no reaction.

I've always been told not to give babies peanut butter or anything with peanuts in it. If they happen to be allergic to it, then it can be deadly. I never gave it to my son, just to be careful, he now eats it on stuff but he's 3 years old.

Peanut butter can cause serious allergic reactions in children and should only be given after at least two years of age. It can stop breathing within minutes. child died recently from a kiss after someone ate peanut butter. My partner is allergic and have seen him nearly stop breathing very scary.

It is reccommended by the american academy of pediatrics that babies under 1 year old should not eat peanut butter (or anything containing peanuts) due to the possibilities of allergic reaction. You did not say how old your baby is. I hope this helps.

The AMA recommends that you wait to give peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish to children 2 years old and older.
The reason you should wait is that your baby is not allergic to these agents now, but his immune system is not fully functioning. Early introduction to these known allergens can trigger an allergic reaction. Not only could your child become allergic to these agents, but he could develop asthma or atopic dermatitis from early exposure.
Best to wait
