I leave the flourescent light on during the night on my fresh water aquarium, but I'd really like to turn it off during the night so the light doesnt travel into my bedroom. Is this safe?? Does the light NEED to be on during the night?? I dont want to risk killing my fish. Please advise.

OH NO you dont leave the light on all the time your fish are gonna go into shock or something plus this only creats tons of algea growth the less light the better the lights purpose is only for our pleasure not that the fish or the tank need it at all you could leave it off all the time and it wouldnt make a difference except you would have less growth of green stuff, who told you to leave it on all the time? Most fish need to have a day and night. Fish aquariums have lights in them so they can provide a daytime and a nighttime. Think about fish in natural situations, such as lakes and oceans. The sun rises, and the sun sets. Therefore, when your aquarium comes with a light at the top, you should turn it off at night. The following site below, gives details as the "natural" light is to set up your tank near a window where they can get the sun, taking into consideration how much exposure, we wouldnt want to cook our little friends. And also ways for light with bulbs. The tank in my bedroom is set to natural light, while the one in the living room is on bulbs. All fish and creatures need a sleeping time, and gives nocturnal species time to come out also, when its dark ope this helps :)

if you're using the light as a heater, then get a heater, ten bucks at the petstore, and then you can turn ur light off.

no, the fish usally don't need the light to be on, unless they're feeding. they eat in the daylight.

also, leaving the light on all the time will promote algea, and make more work for you in the long run with having to clean the tank.

i turn my tank lights off when i go to bed, and don't turn them back on until i get home from work the next eveing. 4-10 hours is sufficent for ur fishies to be happy.

good luck!!

No,it doesn't need to be on all the time.In the wild ,it's not light all the time. The fish actually like darkness.Just leave the light on for 8-12 hours a day. They need a period of darkness each night, just as you do.

hello, fish only need 6 to 8 hrs of light during the day. fish need that time at night to relax. also leaving the light on all the time can cause unsightly algae growth.

There is no need to keep the light on all night. My fish hides underneath his bridge when the light is off.

Unless you have live plants in your tank, the light only needs to be on for you to see the fish.

If you have live plants, you need 8-10 hours of light per day.

Yeah,
you can turn it off.
I mean, it's good to have a break from things.
my fish hides in various places when the light is off.
He likes it.
