The Roman Empire was divided into 2 smaller empires. The Byzantine Empire, I believe was longest to survive and asked the Pope to help fend of the Muslims which started the Crusades.

The West part in 476, when the last emperor, Romulus Augustuls was deposed and Odoachrus was named king of Italy.
The East part the 29 May 1453, when the Turks took the city of Constantinople ( or Byzantium ). This is one of the factors that may have begun the Renaissance
