The first thing that you do not want do is stereotype the "goth" culture.. Your son is starting to explore different genres, and he just happened to pick this one.. Most Goths are actually not always depressing, cynical, or "black".. In fact, with their desiring to be different from mainstream society, they actually create some rather interesting visions of the World.. Now, if he starts to display some strange behavior, like putting on makeup, listening to bands that you wish were never created, or he starts to bay at the moon, then seek professional help!!

The goth subculture is a contemporary subculture prevalent in many countries. It began in the United Kingdom during the late 1970s to early 1980s in the gothic rock scene, an offshoot of the post-punk genre. The goth subculture has survived much longer than others of the same era. Its imagery and cultural proclivities indicate influences from nineteenth century Gothic literature, mainly through horror movies. The goth subculture has associated gothic tastes in music and fashion. Gothic music encompasses a number of different styles. Common to all is a tendency towards a “dark” sound and outlook. Styles of dress within the subculture range from death rock, punk, androgynous, some Renaissance and Victorian style clothes, or combinations of the above, most often with black attire, makeup and hair.
By the 1990s, the term "goth" and the boundaries of the associated subculture had become more contentious. New youth subcultures emerged, or became more popular, some of them being conflated with the goth subculture by the general public and the popular media. This conflation was primarily owing to similarities of appearance, and the fashions of the subcultures, rather than the musical genres of the bands associated with them. As time went on, the term was extended further in popular usage, sometimes to define groups that had neither musical nor fashion similarities to the original gothic subculture.

when one is GOTH it means that no other social group has accepted them ( example) atlethic/jocks.....nerds......rockers......
gang bangers and so on. so what happens is rather than be alone, the GOTH wears all black, paints their face and gets fugly piercings and tatttoos just for the attention of those who do not pay any attention to them anyways..
when the whole goth scene started with marilyn manson back in 93-94 , we meaning the cool crowd would beat on the GOTH
wonder if this still happens..........
