I think humanizing animals is stupid. They're animals, they don't think, why should we treat them like humans? I'm not saying we should treat them badly, but we should treat them like ANIMALS, not people.

Humanizing animals is just going to make the children of this country react more strongly to animal deaths and think that every time a cow is slaughtered in a slaughterhouse that it is some terrible tragedy and that it is the same as a human death, when it clearly isn't to anyone with anyone with common sense. Unfortunately as well, humanizing animals is going to lead to more bleeding heart vegetarians who are some of the most annoying people on the planet.

peta is radical and i don't like them. adoption is a term that is used when you get a baby, or child that you, yourself did not give birth to or sire. you may or may not feel that you own that child. but you do make a commitment to raise and care for it. right? so why should getting an animal from the pound be any different? you adopt it, and make a commitment to raise and care for it. it's not disposeable if you decide you don't want it any more. you wouldn't get rid of an adopted child if it was giving you problems.
how it affects kids? hmmmmm maybe if you adopted a pet for your adopted child, and then got rid of the pet......your adopted child may feel you may some day do the same thing to him.
just a thought to ponder. guess it depends how much you value any life and how committed you are

You seem very misinformed about animal adoption. Adopters do NOT make money. Right now our rescue is many thousands of dollars in debt from taking care of animals. We put a lot of our own money into the rescue, and take in donations, and we still don't even "break even", so to speak. That is why most rescues are nonprofits.

I would say that if people on the internet quit meandering around throwing rocks and decided to volunteer and work with children, and getting children adopted, there wouldn't be a problem. Luckily, children aren't killed in shelters when there are too many, and people have the ability to stop themselves from breeding... unlike animals.

I don't think it adversley effects our children or anyone else. We're a society that have animals in our lives by choice, as opposed to our ancestors who used animals to help them earn a living. Animals are being looked on more as family members than possessions.
The wording of adoption or calling our pets fur babies - it's just words. They are terms of affection.
Having pets in to home and treating them with love and respect is a boon to helping children learn the importance of respect for others. And, pets give undivided attention when we need it the most, and they love us in spite of how we look or what we do.
I'm not sure where you're going with the adoption/money/selling thing. I don't see them as being comparable.
As for Peta - I'm BIG on animal rights, but I have NO respect for Peta. They talk big, and make grand displays for the media, but their tactics (throwing fake blood on people wearing fur) are inappropriate. Where were they during the whole Katrina rescue effort? Best Friends, North Shore, Doris Day, scores of rescue groups were down there for weeks, some for months. Never, not once was ther mention of Peta being involved. They also have "rescued" cats and dogs, only to destroy them when they couldn't find homes for them as fast as they hoped.
There are wonderful animal rights groups. They work hard placing animals in loving homes, or caring for the ones they can't place, they care for forever. Peta isn't one of these.

This is the defination of Adopt:

Pronunciation: &-'däpt
Function: verb
Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French or Latin; Middle French adopter, from Latin adoptare, from ad- + optare to choose
transitive verb
1 : to take by choice into a relationship; especially : to take voluntarily (a child of other parents) as one's own child
2 : to take up and practice or use
3 : to accept formally and put into effect
4 : to choose (a textbook) for required study in a course
intransitive verb
1 : to adopt a child
2 : to sponsor the care and maintenance of

SO it is not just a "human term" The money collected for a pet adoption goes the support the shelter( usually NON-Profit) Some people cannot have children of their own and pet are a way for them to fill that void. I personally think our human children will benefit form taking care of a pet, it teaches them responsibility and how to love openly.

Having a pet teaches children responsibility. It teaches them
love, caring and nurturing skills. Adopt means to take on responsibility of raising a life. Last time I checked animals are
considered life. It is impossible to make animals human.
We can, on the other hand, attribute human qualities in animals.
My dog and cat miss us when we are gone. Dogs will mourn
the death of their owner. Owners mourn the death of a pet. This
is normal behavior.
