His mom did terrible things to him. What did she get for doing that to him? In the end the police find out, but it doesn't say what happened to her. She's rotting in hell now but what did the authorities do?!??

That was such a tragic story. Everyone that is going into any profession that deals with children should read that book. I read two other books written by that author ("The Lost Boy" and "A man called Dave") to try to find the same answer you are looking for, and to find out why his mom did those terrible things to him. From what I can remember he went to foster care, and the other children stayed with the mom. Their is not really an answer as to why she did it, she obviously needed some serious mental health treatment as she was a very sick woman.

Not a thing. The woman got away with not only abusing Dave but his brother Russell who was next to him in age, as well. You have to remember that the book was written about the early 70's. Child Abuse laws here in California were still shaky. There was still the problem as to what was considered abuse and what was considered discipline. The mother painted a horrible picture of Dave being disobediant and a theif. So the best thing for them to do at the time was remove the child from the problem. I believe it's in one of the other books where she actually had the nerves to visit him in one of the foster homes he lived in. She evn brought his bike to him, which she had let rust and one of his brothers take apart. She tried to tell the foster parent how "bad" Dave was but if memory serves me correctly the foster mother saw right through it.

I think "banner" has given you the best answer so far. I just finished reading this book myself. I wish I would have read it a few years ago when Dave Peltzer was giving a lecture at my college. I would have skipped class to go and listen to him speak. I have not yet read the other two books in the trilogy. I do think that we have to remember that this was over 20 years ago, and that child abuse wasn't given the attention it is today. People believed it to be isolated... something that didn't happen in their neighborhood, school, church.. etc. The laws were not in place to take care of abused children. Thank goodness that there is some awareness today. I am glad that people like Mr. Peltzer are willing to share their stories, and that there are people who are willing to stand up for children that are being abused. We all need to be willing to take that stand. Sorry, I went off on a tangent. I hope you are able to find a direct answer to your question.

at the end dave gets saved. then he skips a bunch of years ahead in his life to when he has a kid and alks about how much he loves his son and would never hurt him. it is a true story. it happened to dave when he was a kid. if i was that kid i would tell the police. i would run to the police before school in the morning. it doesnt say what happened to the rest of the characters, but i know his brother, rich, wrote two books. i think his mom is dead now and i know she didnt have to go to jail at all.

Nothing happened to her. David was taken away and his younger brother (Robert?) started receiving the same type of abuse. In the end - absolutely nothing happened to her. Sick huh?
