Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois were both advocates for equal rights for African Americans. They both wanted equality between blacks and whites, but they beleived differently about how to obtain equality. Booker T. Washington believed that African Americans should better themselves to earn the respect of the whites, while W.E.B. Du Bois believed that African Americans should simply be given equal rights without bettering themselves.

Booker T. Washington felt that in order for blacks of that time to advance, they would have to temporarily surrender their rights as citizens to better themselves as a group. He felt that blacks needed to learn trades and in all honesty, probably had a better feel for the situation of the Southern black than Du Bois.

W.E.B Du Bois felt that blacks should not let whites trample on them and demand their rights.He felt that education was the key for blacks, especially in the early part of the last century.He did not feel that Washington's way was the right way, but in retrospect, did not have to grow up in the South like Washingon did.

I feel that both probably had a grudgingly mutual respect.Du Bois made a comment at the time of Booker's death in the way, that he did good, but the condition of the black man was due to the way Washington approached things.
