networking must not like me. okay, objective, im trying to get two computers linked to play multiplayer stategy game. the two computers are xp computers. theyre not old. i got a router, attached cables from router to both computers and it only recognizes that there is one computer. im using the wires that look advanced to regular phone wires. i tried the network wizard in control panel and there is a repeating error, it wont let me finish the network wizard. any ideas on how to link the computers or whats wrong? =)

Is your cable yellow and marked "Crossover" ?
WAN plug goes to the modem, and the station plugs(Usually 1~4) goes to the machine.
Also, powercycle everything once it is all hooked up - plug the modem in first, followed by the Router, then the pc's.

on the desktop screen of both computers right click on the "my computer" icon and select properties. Select computer name and make sure each computer has a unique name. (can be anything such as computer 1 and computer 2) Then below make sure it says part of workgroup, and put in a work group name. Once again, you can select any name you want; just make sure both computers have the same work group name. Since your using a router, you can manually set up your tcp/ip address. Go to start, and look for my network tap. Open that and select network connections. Right click on the network adapter and select properties, then select tcp/ip and select properties. Make sure your ip address is uniqe (propably something along the lines of like 192.168.1.2 for and and .3 for the second; your subnet will probably be 255.255.255.0 and your default gateway will be 192.168.1.1 (assuming your ip address starts that way) Your DNS will be the same as your gateway. Both computers should then be able to see each other. Good luck.

First, check the cables (as the response above suggests).
Your router should have a configuration web page (check your manual for details). Use this and make sure the modem is allocated as the "DHCP server". Then make sure that the WinXP computers have their network settings set to "Obtain an IP address automatically". Reboot the computers and you should be fine.

right click on my computer left click on manage double click on device manager click on the plus sign next to network adapters make sure it is working properly no red or red x if it is red right click on the adapter and enable if necessary download the driver and enable
