They proved that this actually works on mythbusters, for diesal engines anyway, but they showed how they took the leftover oil from a deep fat frier in a restaurant. I was just curious if the oil needed to be deep fat fried first, or if you could take a bottle right off the shelf in a supermarket to make your car go...not that I want to try this by the way. I am just curious.

There are different kinds of modifications that can be made to a vehicle. Bio Diesel is a chemical modification of the oil which is then blended with diesel fuel. This is probably the most common method right now because it does not require any further modifications to the engine, etc. But other methods of adding mechanical filters and modified exhaust systems will allow a diesel engine to run on pure vegetable oil. The second type of system will usually start the car on regular diesel, but then after a short period will allow the driver to switch over to pure vegetable oil.

And no, it does not have to be deep fried first. You could just use the vegetable oil off the shelf, but that would not be very cost effective. That is why people choose to use the dirty oil that is disposed of by restaurants. This dirty oil still has to be filtered so that there are no food particles in it, so even though the oil can often be obtained for free from a restaurant, it does require some effort before it can just be poured into your tank.

I recall seeing the program, I am sure that you remember that the cooking oil had to go through a process before being used as a fuel for diesels.

I understand what you are saying cooking oil Is already ultra clean and may prove to be more costly than diesel fuel at the pumps. Dare you try It on a diesel engine and ruin the injectors, they are a pretty pricey repair.

No. The reason they got it from a restaurant is it is free. A five gallon jug of cooking oil cost about $26.
