The film Casper with Christina Ricci was the first time that the nature of Casper's death was explored. According to the film, he received a sled as a present and spent all day playing on it sliding down the hills. Despite his father's protests and the fact it was winter, he kept on playing on it until it was past nightfall. He then got sick (from pneumonia as the article on the floor in the attic has a heading that says "Pneumonia claims life of 12 yr. old boy") and died at the age of twelve.

In the movie...(the one starring Christina Ricci) He was a young boy (about 12 or so) who lived in the house, with his inventor father. Apparently, he got very sick from playing out in the snow, and died. His spirit, along with those of his uncles, never left the house. If you watch the movie, it tells you all of that, because for the most part, Casper doesn't remember who he was. That is, until he and the girl find the underground workshop of Casper's father and he begins to remember.
