birth control shot, how soon does it kick in

Depo Provera works within the first 24 hours if you get it taken while you are on your period. Otherwise, I believe it takes a week to begin to work (most doctors recommend that you get your first shot in the middle of your period to be 100% sure you aren't pregnant already and to regulate the cycle of taking the shot). I would suggest looking into the horror stories of the shot online before you begin on it. I started taking the shot last year and found it horrible. I quit after only 3 injections. You will have NO sex drive, be extremely moody, and test the patience of whoever you are with (almost lost a great guy from the constant mood swings). After the shot, you'll find your period cramps (if you get any already) are worse than before you started. You will bleed heavier after and it also took me about 7 months after my last shot to get it out of my system. Good luck in your decision making. Please be sure to look into it completely before you begin using it.
