If you are traveling in a circle at a constant speed then you are accelerating toward the center of the circle (like a body in orbit)...
the speed is NOT changing but the object would be accelerating.

If speed is constant, but direction changes, velocity changes. Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity, not speed.

Circlular motions use acceleration different than Linear motions. In circles an object must always have acceleration to stay in the orbit making it the measure of motion, while in linear motions acceleration is the change of velocity.

if you are using this in relation to calculus then:
say you have a function, f(x)
the first derivative f'(x) is the velocity (speed)
the second derivative f''(x) is the acceleration
the second derivative is the rate of change of the first
therefore, acceleration is always the rate of change of speed

if someone is slowing down they still have a negative acceleration......be careful how you use the word speed also.....acceleration is the rate of change of velocity.

acceleration is increasing speed...slowing down is deceleration...
rate of change can be either way
